60 million iPhone apps downloaded and $30 millions in 30 days

Steve Jobs, presumably speaking from a hyperbaric chamber where he’s being nourished with an infusion of liquified developers-souls before his next public appearance, had a few interesting tidbits about the AppStore for the Wall Street Journal this morning. Namely, users have downloaded some 60 million programs for the iPhone representing sales of about $30 million since the launch last month — a 30/70 revenue split between Apple and developers, respectively. “The thing’s going to crest a half billion soon,” Jobs added, “I’ve never seen anything like this in my career for software.” He went on to say that phone differentiation is no longer about radios and antennas (or uh, battery life) but about software. Steve also confirmed the controversial iPhone application kill switch in the event that Apple inadvertently approves a malicious program for distribution. Jobs said, “hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull.” As to the $999.99 I Am Rich application, the dubious download that displayed nothing but a glowing red gem, pulling that from the store was a “judgment” call. Sure, but that doesn’t explain how it made it through the vetting process to begin with.

Xbox 360 goes 60GB, 20 gigger going for $299 while supplies last

Word on the street was that the $299 price slash we’ve been hearing about wasn’t about carving out a new pricepoint but instead making room for a new 60GB Xbox 360 in its place. Turns out the Mr. Word on the Street nailed this one, with Microsoft finally fessing up to the price drop, and announcing a new fancy 60GB Xbox 360 to fill in at that $349 pricepoint, which will be available in “early August.” You can pick up a 20GB “while supplies last,” but the $279 Arcade and $449 Elite aren’t budging price wise. Oh, and can we just say that this couldn’t come at any better a time? We just had to delete August Rush to make room for National Treasure 2, which we’ll probably have to drop tomorrow for Fool’s Gold. Such is life when you’ve only got 20GB to work with.

New Dell Mini PC: Studio Hybrid

(From Engadget and Crave)

Looks like word got out early
on Dell’s Studio Hybrid small form factor system. Aside from the casing and the stand, both of which are removable, it’s roughly the same size as Apple’s Mac Mini. In addition to forgoing the eco-friendly wood for what appears to be a sleek, orange Plexiglas shell, the system boasts an Intel chipset, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, WiFi, a DVD+R drive, five USB ports, an HDMI port, S/PDIF, DVI, and a memory card reader. I’m not sure exactly when Dell plans to unleash these on consumers or what the final cost will be, though previously the company had stated plans to offer it later this year for between $500 and $700.
